    Melinda Tankard Reist
    19 Nov 2009 | 5:00 am
The November issue of the breast gallery magazine Ralph has attracted a truckload of praise for supposedly going where no lads' mag has gone before: the body of an "average" woman. The issue features singer and Australian Idol host Rikki-Lee Coulter, who is a size 14. She is pictured as voluptuous and haughty in the uniform of the dominatrix, with tight zippered corsets, bustiers, black gloves, killer heels and a long leather whip. Ralph's choice of a "larger" woman for its cover has been hailed as enlightened and bold. Bravo Ralph! Congratulations! Average women everywhere rejoice and be…
  • OneTel...one big debacle

    Tom Elliott
    19 Nov 2009 | 5:00 am
Ten years ago the upstart telco OneTel was the darling of the local stockmarket. The company was run by entrepreneurs Jodee Rich and Brad Keeling, it had powerful backers like heirs apparent Jamie (as he was then known) Packer and Lachlan Murdoch, and yet-to-be-disgraced-trader Rodney Adler bought in and out of the company's shares on a regular basis. Most of these men knew each other from their years at Sydney's elite Cranbrook School for boys. Yet today, very few of them would give each other the time of day. So how did the OneTel dream go so wrong? How is it that 10 years later Rich and…

I hazarded a comment whereby I linked the incidence of PND to our isolated suburban way of living. Here was my comment: Isolation in Suburbia: The obsession with…
  • The arts aren't dangerous

    19 Nov 2009 | 5:00 am
The arts have run out of dangerous ideas - all the taboos have been broken, and there is nothing shocking left to say. Nothing visionary, or even important. Does anyone still think you can change society with better architecture? The ABC's Stephen Crittenden hosts a discussion between sociology professor and author of Humanism: the Wreck of Western Culture, John Carroll; The Chaser's Julian Morrow; and The Age columnist Catherine Deveny. The arts are sometimes described as a safe place to raise dangerous issues, but are they really nothing more than a harmless consolation for the middle class?

Australia, like many other industrialised countries, is facing a major economic and social challenge brought on by the aging of the population. Our challenge has been well publicised. • Toy Symphony

    12 Nov 2009 | 5:21 pm
Queensland Theatre Company have pulled out all the stops for the end of their 2009 season with the continued run on their highly successful production of The Crucible at the Playhouse and with the opening of Michael Gow's latest work Toy Symphony right next door at the Cremorne. A more artistically challenging finale to the end of the season would be hard to imagine.Toy Symphony is, ostensibly, a play about writers and writing. But it is also so much more than that. It is a delightfully clever, challenging and entertaining look at the world of the imagination. It is a theatrical outworking of…

    29 Oct 2009 | 9:27 pm

  • The true story of Butterfish

    11 Oct 2009 | 9:27 pm

Who can forget the wonderful Zigzag Street or the equally quirky 48 Shades of Brown for example? Both dealt with young people living in Brisbane's inner west and examined aspects of what it is like to be young in this great city of ours.
